Beach Clean with The Darwin Centre

14th Dec 2021

Wow! What a fantastic way to end our topic on plastic pollution! The children loved completing an environmental study on Freshwater West beach. We used scientific equipment to record the air temperature, the wind speed and direction, and our observations about the landscape and layout of the beach. We then went on to use grab claws to collect litter. We found an abundance of macroplastics (any plastic larger than 0.5cm) including bottles, packaging, rope and even shotgun cartirdges. We then spent time gathering and sieving microplastics (any plastic smaller than 0.5cm). We gathered four huge and heavy bags full of plastic.

It is absolutely shocking and devastating to see how much damage we are causing to the most beautiful parts of our world. But it is wonderful to see how caring and conscientious the children are. They want to make a difference.

The children showed off their knowledge, answered questions and threw themselves into every activity. A huge well done to Presipe class and a big thank you to The Darwin Centre.
