World War One Topic

20th Jan 2020

Throughout our winter term topic we have been ethically, informed citizens of Wales and the world. We have been learning about our world at the start of the 20th century and have considered the question - ‘Would I stay or would I go?’

As part of this we have explored different aspects of World War One including the causes and consequences, the Home Front, code breaking, propaganda, trench life, war poetry and Remembrance.

A hands on experience is always best. The children had a chance to follow a traditional recipe to make trench stew. A warm stew made in the trenches by soldiers, typically in a tin over a lit candle, so that they could have a warm meal. Food coming from the trench kitchen would arrive cold or not arrive at all.

We have been fortunate enough to have a visitor from The Education Group who took on the role of a soldier fighting in the trenches. With him, he brought artefacts such as ammunition, a military uniform, food, medals and a rifle.

The teachers and staff spent a morning in role play as military trainers whilst the children took part in a boot camp. The weather was horrendous and we all ended up soaking wet and muddy. It was definitely a day to remember!

Freshwater West and Newgale led the way when it came to Remembrance 2019. The children, staff and parents of Fenton worked incredibly hard to put together a display worthy of the efforts of those we remember. Everyone got involved in creating fabric and felt poppies which were then tied to the railings at the front of the school. It was a great success and was it fantastic to hear such lovely comments from passers by. A massive well done to all involved!
